Volunteers have demonstrated beyond any doubt the value of the project and the rewards are there for all to see. The flooding of the Somerset levels together with areas in the “Home Counties” succeeded in concentrating the minds of those who perhaps had been a little slow in appreciating the significant benefits of CR programmes. North Somerset Council and Community Resilience North Somerset are working to construct a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the relationship between the two bodies. In the next few weeks an application will be submitted to the Charities Commission for registration as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and the project team has begun the process of seeking sponsorship. Through Voluntary Action North Somerset a Volunteer of the Year ceremony, sponsored by Knighstone Housing Association was held today. The Community Resilience Steering Group was asked to cast votes for two awards; and I am delighted to announce the following winners: • Community Resilience Champion 2014 – Pat Walmsley (Cleeve) Congratulations! Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is looking for volunteers who can raise awareness of Home Fire Safety Visits (HFSVs). Community Champion Volunteers will be asked to spend around eight hours a month talking to local groups about the benefits of a HFSV and encouraging people to sign up. Referrals will be passed to AF&RS and firefighters will visit the homes to discuss fire safety issues specific to the property and fit free smoke alarms where required. Community Champion Volunteers will be providing a valuable service to local people by helping to increase fire safety awareness and prevent accidental fires. AF&RS Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Mick Dixon, said: “We are keen to spread the fire safety message across our local communities and have developed the Community Champion Volunteer scheme as a way to ensure we can reach those most in need. Community Champion volunteers have an important role to play in preventing fires and potentially saving lives.” No qualifications or previous experience is needed and full training and support will be given to all volunteers. Community Champion volunteers will gain new skills, meet a wide range of people and make a positive contribution to people’s safety. This scheme also provides an opportunity for existing Community Resilience North Somerset Volunteers to help reduce risk in their community in partnership with AF&RS. Please encourage your Community to sign up to the scheme – join forces and keep those key community footpaths and venues open through any snow event – snow shovels and hi-vis provided for free!! Perhaps there is a specific site that needs clearing such as your local school, village shop, doctors surgery? Join forces with your neighbours to become Snow Wardens and help each other when the weather gets tough. Get Ready for Winter CampaignThe Met Office and the Government will soon release their ‘Get Ready for Winter’ campaign. North Somerset Council is looking to appoint a small number of dynamic, charismatic volunteers to lead the future development and sustainability of resilient communities. Working alongside the project team, Voluntary Action North Somerset (VANS) and executive leads of partner agencies you will have a critical role in helping to integrate Community Resilience North Somerset into the wider resilience community. Your efforts will help develop a sustainable network of volunteers, utilising local skills and expertise to help their community in an emergency, in a way that complements the response of the emergency services.
